What is Durolane?

Durolane is an injection treatment used to relieve joint pain. It contains high levels of hyaluronic acid, a clear substance produced naturally in our body.  It is present in the eyes, skin and connective tissue, and helps to keep tissues lubricated. Injecting hyaluronic acid preparation in the joint is also called Viscosupplementation.

Durolane Injection for the Knee

Durolane knee injections are recommended by your doctor if you are:

  • Suffering knee pain associated with osteoarthritis
  • Unsuccessful with medications or other non-surgical treatment methods

Preparation

Talk to your doctor about the medicines you are taking. Inform your doctor if you are allergic to any medicines or anesthesia.

Technique

Injecting Durolane usually involves the following steps:

  • Your skin at the injection site is cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Local anesthesia may be used to keep you comfortable.
  • A sterilized needle is injected into the soft tissue of your knee and advanced towards the joint.
  • Excess fluid may be removed from the knee joint followed by injection of Durolane.
  • Imaging guidance such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy may be used for accurate placement.
  • Plaster is usually placed over the injection site.

After the procedure

Following a Durolane injection, you may experience slight pain or soreness of the knee joint that can be managed by the application of ice packs. You will be advised to avoid strenuous activity for a day or two. 

Complications of Steroid Injections

Complications are rare, but can include:

  • Redness and bruising at the site of infection
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Sneezing and runny rose
  • Sore throat
  • Trouble walking

Advantages

The advantages include:

  • Relieves pain
  • Improves joint function
  • Delays the need for surgery

Contraindications

Durolane injections are not recommended in the following cases:

  • There is an infection of the knee joint
  • You have skin disease at the injection site
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • You are allergic to medications
